Living in Thailand
More and more people want to live or retire abroad and Asia, especially Thailand is coming to the top of people’s lists as great place to live. My father retired there some 5 years ago and has no regrets and now after many visits I have grown to enjoy Thailand and all that it has to offer. The “land of smiles” is now very accessible to anyone and the area of Pattaya/Jomtien is fast becoming the place to be.
However, it is not all plain sailing as with any investment/relocation and in Thailand it is crucial to deal with the right people. I have joined forces with Paul Davis and his team at KCR Homefinder to provide all the assistance you could need to find the right home for you in Thailand. KCR is very experienced in all aspects of real estate and has helped clients with all sorts of investments from condominiums, businesses, new build and land purchase. They also have key contacts for design and build and have their own small development of 4 bedroom pool villas in one of the most sought after locations. Just to give you an idea of how inexpensive Thailand is a villa in the above development with all bedrooms en suite and a plot size just under a football pitch would cost around £150,000 depending on exchange rates.
Some key features of Thailand Pattaya/Jomtien
- Climate - hot year round, rainy season in September. Rainy season means heavy rain for an hour or two.
- Cost of living, less than half that in the UK, expats say even less than that.
- Excellent medical facilities, I have been to a hospital in Pattaya and it was very impressive compared to the UK.
- The new motorway which runs from Bangkok via the new airport is all but complete, Bangkok airport is just over an hour away.
- Lots of inward investment in Pattaya/Jomtien just happening. A new shopping centre, 2 4/5 star hotels and several condominiums currently under construction.
- Tesco and the French supermarket chain Carrefour have several stores so plenty of EU food. There is also an excellent English butcher in Jomtien. English is widely spoken and Thai phrases are easy to pick up, but good luck if you are going to try and write in Thai!
- Crime, I have not seen any in my time in Thailand and reported crime is much lower than UK levels, that being said always be careful and keep your wits about you as in any foreign country
- Pattaya and Jomtien are two long sandy coves with all the beach facilities you could need. Pattaya is a city and has all the usual amenities. Banking is also available and though lots of signatures and paperwork are required to start, things get much easier thereafter, I can say this from experience.
- Recreation and activities are everywhere from trips to the River Kwai to Polo, from some of the best golf courses in the world to sailing diving or a walk round the Crocodile farm. Eating out is everywhere and restaurants of all nationalities. Fantastic street food under £1 a dish to 5 star fine dining at less than £20 a head. Entertainment of live music to ten pin bowling, bars and clubs to a relaxing Thai massage for an hour only £3.
